Using Interactive Writing
to Develop Literacy
During my studies at ECU, I had the opportunity to complete an action research study on literacy. I chose to focus on the Interactive Writing strategy to determine its usefulness in my kindergarten classroom. The purpose of the study was to determine if using Interactive Writing would improve my students' reading and writing scores. At the conclusion of the study, I discovered that my students had become better readers and writers as a result of using this engaging writing strategy. Visit this link to learn more details about the study.

Interactive writing…
... is an instructional tool educators use to support students as they learn to use written language to express their ideas.
… involves children in the writing process as they learn to spell the words they need to express meaning.
… allows teachers to work collaboratively with their students as they compose written messages together.
… provides opportunities for teachers to act as facilitators while they build supportive conversations and continuously shape interactions to boost children’s participation.

Components of Interactive Writing
1. Provide opportunities for meaningful writing connected to classroom experiences and rich literature.
2. Encourage students to interact as they discuss the purpose of the text (i.e. turn-and-talk).
3. The students and teacher negotiate the text to be written together.
4. Students co-construct the text by "sharing the pen."
5. The teacher encourages students to reread the text each time a new word in written.
6. The instructor seizes "teachable moments" to model early literacy skills and provide instruction.
7. Connections are made to prior knowledge of writing, previously read texts, and environmental print.

Parents and students can work together to share their thoughts and ideas in an Interactive Writing journal. Check out this site to get ideas for using this at home! The journals can be created with simple materials at home or purchased from sites like amazon.com. I found an interesting site that explains the value of performing interactive activities with children as well as suggests a great interactive journal that could be purchased.

The students produce meaningful texts about a book they read together or an experience they had such as a going on a field trip. Some example can be seen below.
