Although my parents were raised in Kinston, N.C., I grew up in Raleigh, N.C. After graduating from Millbrook Senoir High School, I attended the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill (UNC-CH) for 3 years and transfered to East Carolina University (ECU) after moving to Kinston. While there, I received a BS degree in Early Childhood Education. I have been teaching at Contentnea-Savannah School (CSS for over 21 years. Although I enjoyed teaching third grade for many years, I discovered that my real passion is for teaching kindergarten! I truly enjoy working with the younger students and like having a part in getting their educational career off to a great start!
After many years, I decided to return to the classroom as a student myself. I am currently attending ECU in order to obtain a Masters Degree in Reading. I have three children, a son who is 25 years old and two daughters, age 21 and 16. As I was helping my daughter prepare for college, I was greatly inspired to return to school myself. I have been attending graduate school for 2 1/2 years and am excited to say I will graduate this spring! My family has gotten a kick out of watching their mom function as a student herself! Although they tease me often, they are very supportive of my new goal in life. I am hopeful that my classes at ECU will enable me to be a better reading teacher for my students.
I also teach an adult literacy class at Lenoir Community College to help adults improve their reading ability. Through the years, I have discovered how important reading is to ensuring our success in society. Many students struggle with reading and I see how frustrating this is to them! I hope by receiving a masters in reading I will be able to make a difference with my students at CSS and those at LCC!
